Time Passes - The Clock
On Monday November 7th 2022, I was invited by Caroline to share a few words at David's Life Celebration; his life ended prematurely after a short illness, his illness misdiagnosed, the disease came to spread, and then it was too late.
Four years ago, possibly around this time David and Caroline were immersed in an adventure of time.
One afternoon, together they found a comfortable sofa at an auditorium at The Tate Modern.
They were determined to sit though, and they did,
the twenty four hour installation of Christian Marclay’s acclaimed masterpiece
The Clock,
a montage of thousands of film and television images of clocks,
edited together so they showed the actual time in real time.
You can imagine them, sitting together, making time together, keeping awake, twenty four hours remember! helped by the abundance of sweets!
How do I know this? Because throughout the time I have known David I have always enjoyed conversations with him of his cultural escapades and this masterpiece at The Tate was something I came to enjoy as well.
Then David had time, he had time behind him of his accomplishments, and there were many, of his regrets, and there were a few, and time ahead of him, of his new found career, his new found love in Caroline, and including Olive and Ethel their dogs and his renewed relationships with his children too.
And time together with us is what he had until he ran out of time. But as long as our time lingers on, we hold him in our memories, and grateful for our time together herethis afternoonpiecing together our memories of David who loved and was loved!
Rest in Peace David!
Thank you Caroline Cameron, your time with David Compton was incredibly special to the both of you!
CHRISTIAN MARCLAY: THE CLOCK showcased between 14 SEPTEMBER 2018 to 20 JANUARY 2019, a 24-hours long installation of a montage of thousands of film and television images of clocks, edited together so they show in actual time. I enjoyed this thrilling journey together with Rachel and Nadya one Sunday morning and then again with Graham, or it may have been the other way round!
