Ode to the tomato
I have loved watching you grow
Born of a tiniest seed, delicately shaped,
you appeared one day out of the soil
How one leaf turned into two, and then four and perhaps eight
But then I lost count of your growth.
In the early days you were so fragile to hold
Wrapped in brown earth
You multiplied and behold
A cluster of yellow flowers grown of the vine
And in no time
You gave me what your intentions have been
Bright red berries we cherished
And christened
Grape, or Cherry or Gardeners Delight
The holy water from a watering can
Continued to sustained your thirsty quench
Until the harvest called for your collection
A basketful of tomatoes
Signs of summer we forever behold
You have continued to bring me endless joy!
Your fruit grown of the vine
So sweet, so bountiful
I sense I blush calling you by name
You, the humble tomato.
Tasked with writing an Ode. Almost impossible! I couldn't find inspiration until the sweetest tomato found me! June 2024
